Set in a precarious time between the end of the age of stone and the beginning of the age of metal, Children of the Black Glass is a thrilling story of wonder, resilience and courage.
A remote village high in the mountains is the only source of black glass in a vast land. Tell (14) and Wren’s (12) father is badly injured mining one final piece.
Breaking every rule in their village, brother and sister take the season’s haul of black glass down the mountain to the huge trading city of Halfway, by themselves.
They intend to find medicine to save their father’s life and supplies to get them through their harsh mountain winter.
They are unprepared for the journey, they are unprepared for the city of Halfway, and they have no idea that they are walking into a sorcerer’s coup that will rip the city apart around them.
To survive, they have to rely on their mountain skills and toughness, on each other, on strangers that become allies, and on a sorcerer who is a friend to nobody. They will be saved more than once by their clever old mule, Rumble.
Their ordeal in Halfway changes them, their village and the city forever.
Reviews
“I loved every minute of this book - the brightness and courage of the Children as they forge a new world and future for themselves and their friends, the worlds conjured, the battles - both internal and external - fought and won. The magic is not just part of the story, it leaps from every page.”
“Although this book is intended for middle grade readers, I was fully engrossed as an adult reader and could not put it down. It ticked all the boxes I look for in fantasy books: rich worldbuilding, complex magic systems with crafty sorcerers, relatable main characters, tangled family relationships, skillful storytelling, twists and turns.”
